Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd are recognised as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of high-quality seals, manufactured using various types of solid rubber, including Nitrile Insertion rubber. Nitrile insertion seals can take the form of gaskets, washers, O-rings, cord and extrusions, all designed to prevent leaks or the ingress of air, fluids, and gases. All our nitrile insertion rubber seals are made to order and are based on samples or drawings provided by customers to ensure the final product fits the application perfectly. These seals are produced from high-quality nitrile insertion rubber to meet specific application needs.

As each seal type requires a different manufacturing process, ASG has invested heavily in various machinery, enabling us to supply both high and low volumes at the most cost-effective rates. Nitrile-insertion rubber seals are primarily used for sealing applications in the automotive, aerospace, and petrochemical industries; however, they have poor ozone and weathering resistance, so they are not recommended for outdoor use.

What are Solid Nitrile Insertion Rubber Seals?

A ‘seal’ is the generic term for products often taking the form of cut gaskets, strips (which can be supplied in custom lengths for specific sealing applications), washers, extruded profiles and cord, all designed to prevent leaks or ingress of unwanted air, gases, dust or moisture. Nitrile rubber can also be referred to as Nitrile butadiene or NBR rubber, which is a synthetic rubber produced from a copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene. Solid nitrile insertion rubber is manufactured to the exact specification as standard nitrile rubber, giving the seals the same excellent properties, but with a mesh/fabric reinforcement layer running through the centre, which is referred to as the ‘insertion’, used to prevent the material from stretching, therefore increasing its wear and tear resistance. Nitrile insertion rubber can be supplied in various lengths to accommodate different project needs.

Why use Solid Nitrile Insertion Rubber Seals?

Solid Nitrile Insertion rubber seals can take many forms as profiles, all produced from the same material but using different processes or machines. Nitrile insertion seals offer numerous excellent properties and are ideal for air, dust, and water-tight seals. They have excellent tensile strength, anti-abrasion properties, and resistance to petrol, mineral & vegetable oils, as well as some acids and alkalis.

The material also has some flame retardancy, and a working temperature range of -20°C to +70℃, with these seals able to withstand temperatures within this range, making them suitable for various demanding environments. Usually manufactured in a 65°shore hardness (the shore hardness is measured using a shore durometer, which indicates the level of resistance to indentation; the higher number on the scale indicates a greater resistance - harder the material/lower number means less resistance- softer the material). Minimum order quantities or customisation options may be subject to specific requirements depending on the manufacturing process.

    Types of Seals

There is a wide variety of seals available to suit different applications and requirements. O-rings are among the most commonly used types, especially in hydraulic and fuel systems, where a dependable seal is essential to prevent leaks. Nitrile rubber O-rings are particularly valued for their excellent resistance to oils, fuels, and chemicals, making them a preferred choice in many industrial settings. In addition to O-rings, gaskets are another essential type of seal, used to create tight joints between surfaces in pipes, tanks, and machinery. Gaskets can be manufactured from a range of materials, including nitrile rubber, to provide the right balance of flexibility, strength, and chemical resistance. For applications with unique requirements, bespoke gaskets can be custom-made to precise specifications, ensuring a perfect fit and optimal sealing performance. Whether you need standard rings or custom gaskets, nitrile materials offer the versatility and reliability required for a wide range of sealing applications.

    Applications of Seals

Seals are indispensable across numerous industries, preventing the escape of fluids, gases, and contaminants in critical systems. In automotive applications, nitrile rubber seals are commonly used in fuel, hydraulic, and engine components, where their excellent resistance to oils, fuels, and other chemicals ensures long-lasting performance. Beyond the automotive sector, seals are also essential in construction and manufacturing, where they help maintain the integrity of equipment and machinery. Outdoor applications, such as conveyor belts and protection pads, benefit from nitrile seals for their resistance to oils and chemicals, ensuring reliable operation even in challenging environments. The versatility and durability of nitrile rubber make it a top choice for a wide range of sealing needs, helping industries maintain safety, efficiency, and compliance.

    Different Grades of Insertion Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a network of material suppliers and manufacturers, meaning we have access to various grades of insertion rubber, which include:

SBR Insertion rubber (Styrene-butadiene rubber) is a cost-effective, commercial-grade, general-purpose rubber with good abrasion resistance, tensile strength and low compression set. SBR rubber is not suitable for applications involving chemicals, ozone, powerful acids, grease, fat oils and hydrocarbons

Neoprene insertion rubber (CR). Solid Neoprene is one of our most popular solid rubber materials, available in various thicknesses. Neoprene is suitable for use where there is exposure to grease, oil, acids, ozone and even seawater.

Solid EPDM insertion rubber (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), another very popular solid rubber, is ideal for outdoor applications. This material is resistant to water, UV, ozone, weather, abrasion, alkalines, ketones and diluted acids.

Benefits Of Using Nitrile Insertion Seals:

    • Resistant to many chemicals and solvents
    • Suitable for the automotive industry
    • Water, mineral oil, petrol resistance.
    • Can be formed into complex seals and extrusions
    • Abrasive resistant and excellent mechanical strength
    • Excellent seal against gases
    • Tear and stretch resistance

Advantages of using Solid Nitrile Insertion Rubber Seals

Solid Nitrile insertion rubber seals can take countless forms, but all possess the same mechanical properties, making them popular across many industries. Solid Nitrile Insertion rubber seals are mainly used due to the material's resistance to ‘swell' when exposed to oils and fuel, therefore holding its sealing capabilities and not breaking down, making it a popular choice for the production of automotive sealing, abrasive applications, flange gaskets on pipes and tanks, oil and fuel seals, insulating and isolation barriers.

Industries where these seals are used include mining, quarrying, construction, automotive, oil and gas, defence, etc. Seals are generally cut from rolls or sheets produced at standard thicknesses, meaning they can be turned around with a relatively minimal lead time, as there is no need to split the material to the desired thickness.
