Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Seals

Semi Open Cell EPDM Sponge Seals

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd produce and supplies some of the highest quality seals in the UK. Working with a vast network of reputable material manufacturers and suppliers, we offer seals manufactured from premium EPDM sponges in various densities and grades. One of the EPDM sponges we provide is Semi-Open Cell EPDM, sometimes also referred to as semi-closed cell sponge or semi-open cell foam.

This material is produced in block form, which can be split into sheets or joined and split to create continuous lengths or rolls, starting from just 1.5mm in thickness. From these sheets or rolls, seals can be cut into gaskets, washers, strips, pads, or other fabricated components, all designed to prevent leaks or the ingress of air, fluids, and gases.

All Semi-Open Cell EPDM sponge seals are made to order, following customer drawings or samples to ensure the final product perfectly fits the intended application. Each type of sponge seal requires a specific manufacturing process, and ASG has invested heavily in a variety of machinery, allowing us to provide both low and high-volume production. Seals can be supplied in a plain finish, laminated to create additional thicknesses, laminated to other materials, or coated with self-adhesive or foil before cutting.

What are Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Seals?

Semi-Open Cell EPDM is an exceptionally soft and flexible grade of EPDM sponge rubber. It is manufactured from the chemical components Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, but with a unique process that creates a mixture of open and closed cells throughout the material.

The semi-open cell structure is achieved during manufacturing by physically "bursting" the closed cells, producing a softer product that is easier to compress than standard medium or firm grade EPDM sponge. This makes it ideal for sealing applications where flexibility and compressibility are critical.

Semi-Open Cell EPDM sponge seals act as a barrier between surfaces, preventing the escape or entry of liquids, particles, or gases. They can take the form of cut gaskets, strips, washers, extruded or moulded profiles, edge trims, or cord. Many of our sponge seals can be supplied with a self-adhesive backing to assist with placement and ensure the seal remains securely in position.

Why use Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Seals?

Semi-Open Cell EPDM sponge seals are designed to prevent the ingress or escape of dust, air, liquids, or gases when compressed between irregular surfaces, functioning similarly to a gasket. They also provide shock, noise, and vibration dampening in a range of industries.

Semi-open cell EPDM seals combine the flexibility and compressibility of open-cell foam with the sealing performance of closed-cell material. When compressed, they fill gaps and create pressure for an effective airtight seal. These seals are highly durable, with excellent ozone and weathering resistance, and recover more slowly than standard EPDM, which is beneficial for sealing applications. Semi-Open Cell EPDM can be supplied as complete sheets, rolls, or pre-cut and fabricated seals, suitable for both indoor and outdoor sealing, protecting against air, dust, and moisture.

Benefits of using Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge

    • Resistant to ozone and UV light

    • Soft and highly compressible

    • A combination of open and closed cells for superior sealing

    • Excellent acoustic performance

    • Good compression set

    • Effective against air, dust, and moisture

    • Can be converted into various thicknesses and shapes

The Advantages of Using Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Seals

Semi-Open Cell EPDM seals are manufactured from a super-soft material, providing excellent sealing once compressed. Their low compression load allows them to adapt to dimensional deviations in surfaces, making them suitable for rough, smooth, and low-energy substrates. The material offers resistance to ozone and UV, with a working temperature range of -40°C to 100°C, and can seal against water, dust, and air.

Due to its soft and comfortable nature, Semi-Open Cell EPDM sponge seals are ideal for filling gaps and irregularities between surfaces. They also help reduce rattles, noise, and vibration, and cushion moving parts to prevent friction and damage to components. Typical applications include HVAC systems, automotive sealing, and window seals.

    Grades of EPDM Sponge Available

ASG stocks a variety of EPDM sponge grades and densities, each suitable for different applications:

    • Medium Density EPDM: Available in black or white, closed-cell structure, density 90–140 kg/m³, temperature range -20°C to +85°C, FMVSS302 tested. Ideal for internal and external sealing applications with minimal compression.

    • High-Temperature EPDM Foam: Closed-cell and flexible even at low temperatures, range -50°C to +128°C. These materials have excellent thermal and insulation properties, suitable for HVAC, refrigeration, pipelines, automotive, and construction.

    • Firm Grade EPDM Foam: Resilient material with increased tear strength, suitable for demanding applications including automotive, white goods, marine, defence, and building & construction.
