Acoustic Barrier Strip

Here at Advanced Seals and Gaskets Ltd, we produce strips in a variety of sponge and solid polyurethane variants, one of which includes class ‘o’ acoustic polyurethane with barrier strips. In-house design and manufacturing enable us to work closely with our customers and provide high-quality polyurethane with barrier strips to match their specifications, drawings or samples, whilst keeping lead times to a minimum as we do not need to rely on external third party manufacturers.

Class ‘o’ acoustic polyurethane with barrier strips are one of 1000’s products we are able to produce in-house, which are all made to order, manufactured using one of our many machines including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending on the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for a quicker turnaround.

On-site conversion enables us to offer polyurethane with barrier strips made in bespoke sizes, and in a range of composite combinations using the acoustic foam and layers of a mass loaded vinyl barrier, which can be supplied plain, self-adhesive backed or with a foil backing.

What are Class ‘O’ Acoustic Polyurethane with Barrier Strips?

There are many types of Polyurethane materials we can use to cut strips,  one of which is Class 'O' acoustic foam, used to manufacture our Class 'O' polyurethane with barrier strips.  This particular variety of material is open cell, lightweight, flame retardant, non-dusting, doesn’t support mildew or fungal growth and has excellent thermal insulation and noise absorption properties. The addition of the mass loaded vinyl barrier layer creates a composite material, which is designed to reduce noise within enclosed areas, whilst being fire resistant.

Generally, the mass loaded vinyl barrier is sandwiched between 2 layers of acoustic foam, however, more than one layer can be added depending upon the level of soundproofing required.  The acoustic polyurethane with barrier sheets are available in 3 weights and thicknesses as standard, 5kg (2.5 - 3mm thick), 7.5kg (3 - 4mm thick) and 10kg (4-5mm thick), the heavier the weight, the more soundproofing properties the sheet will offer.  The mass loaded vinyl or MLV is a thick flexible material that has been specifically designed for soundproofing, made up using a combination of calcium silicate or barium sulfate which create the sound deadening property, combined with vinyl which makes the material flexible for easier installation.

Using in-house machinery ASG can produce acoustic Polyurethane with barrier strips in specific lengths and widths, which are often used in a similar way to a gasket placed between two surfaces to create a seal, provide cushioning, anti-vibration or insulation. Manufacturing strips in-house means we can supply them in a plain or self-adhesive backed finish and even laminate multiple types of material together to create bespoke and unique variations.

Why use Class ‘O’ Acoustic Polyurethane with Barrier Strips?

Class ‘O’ Acoustic Polyurethane with Barrier Strip (MLV) sheets have been designed for use where a high degree of soundproofing is required within enclosed areas.  The creation of the composite barrier sheet combines a noise barrier and sound absorber into a single product, which also helps with sound transmission loss and vibration dampening even when cut into smaller parts such as strips.

Being a class ‘O’ material, these polyurethane with barrier strips are flame retardant, making them safe to use in a range of industries including HVAC, construction and automotive where they are often found used to fill gaps between fixtures and fittings and used for thermal insulation, heat protection, cushioning, noise and vibration dampening and padding within building, vehicles, engines, machinery or enclosures.

The addition of the mass loaded vinyl barrier to the acoustic foam, enables the composite sheet material to be used for blocking out everyday sounds and noise from loose or moving parts or reducing the running sound from engines or machinery.

The Advantages of Using Class ‘O’ Acoustic Polyurethane with Barrier Strips

Using Class ‘O’ acoustic polyurethane foam barrier materials offers a huge number of benefits and uses. Not only do they help with soundproofing, but they also act as sound and vibration absorption panels, and can help sound transmission loss.

These sheets and products, including polyurethane with barrier strips, can be used to assemble soundproof enclosures in which noisy machinery and equipment can be housed and also as fittings within automotive and HVAC applications, to fill gaps between fixtures and fittings and used for thermal insulation, heat protection, cushioning, noise and vibration dampening and padding within building, vehicles, engines, machinery or enclosures and housings.

As the class ‘O’ foam is flame retardant, it is often one of the safest materials to use within building and construction for soundproofing underlay under flooring, combined with plasterboard on walls and ceilings, especially studios or home cinema rooms and even within engine rooms such as on marine vessels.

The addition of the MLV barrier to the foam creates further features and properties to the acoustic PU foam, it allows the polyurethane with barrier strips to block more noise compared to using the foam by itself creating a higher level of noise absorption and finally many soundproofing boards or tiles can be quite rigid and therefore difficult to cut and install, whereas the MLV barrier is flexible, therefore easy to curve and wrap around corners, pipes and to fit perfectly within housings, etc.

Benefits of using Class ‘O’ Acoustic Polyurethane with Barrier Strips

    • Can be used within floor, wall or ceiling linings for soundproofing
    • Reduce unwanted vibration
    • Flame retardant
    • Can be supplied as cut barrier material alone or laminated between acoustic foam
    • Sheets can be cut down into smaller parts such as pads
    • Available in various thicknesses, weights and variations of layers
    • Doesn’t support mildew or fungal growth

    Different Types Available

The soundproofing barrier material can be supplied in a range of formats, as the mass loaded vinyl barrier sheet alone, alternatively, it can be supplied laminated to class ‘o’ acoustic foam to create composite sheets.

Mass loaded vinyl barrier is available in 3 weights:

    5kg - thickness approx 2.5mm - 3mm (Acoustic performance 26 dB approx)

    7.5kg  - thickness approx 3mm - 4mm

    10kg - thickness approx 4mm - 5mm (Acoustic performance 32 dB approx)

Finishes: Class ‘O’ acoustic Polyurethane foam with Barrier can be supplied plain, with a self-adhesive face to allow for quick and easy installation, or covered with a foil face with the option of a scrim lined foil, which increases the insulation properties of the acoustic barrier sheets even further.
