Mylar is one of our many electrical insulation materials used by ASG for the production of washers. , also known in the industry as Mylar Film, Mylar Electrical Insulation, BoPET (Biaxially-oriMylarented polyethylene terephthalate), Melinex and Hostaphan is a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Mylar Electrical insulation films are very thin and unlike most materials are measured in microns instead of millimeters. Mylar is available in a choice of 12 to 500 microns and is manufactured in roll form at 914mm wide and in lengths of 25 meters up to 200 meters depending on thickness which can be used to convert into washers.
As well as selecting a suitable material, the quality of the cut is also major factor in producing a reliable and perfectly fitting washer, therefore we ensure our in-house manufacturing team follow our customers drawings or samples which detail the Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the thickness, in order to create an exact match reducing the risk of the washer failing when it is placed within its application. A combination of a skilled workforce and high spec machinery including a range of presses and CNC machines allows us to produce Mylar washers in a wide range of sizes and quantities with or with self adhesive faces.

What are Mylar Washers?
Mylar washers are a milky white coloured heat resistant polyester film, also recognised as BoPET (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate), which is a flexible film which offers dielectric strength and moisture and chemical resistance (apart from alcohol) which will not become brittle under normal use. These washers are a flattened ring of Mylar material which are placed between two surfaces in order to reduce friction, unsteadiness and in this case to create an insulating barrier. Mylar electrical insulation washers are durable, versatile and can be found used in many general purpose applications, including those at high temperatures.
Why use Mylar Washers?
Customers will often take washers made from Mylar films as they are ideal for use in many applications for example magnetic media, imaging and graphics, and packaging markets, however it is more often found utilised within electronic and electrical applications as insulation component or barrier. Mylar electrical insulation washers offer good ageing properties, strength, flexibility, durability with a high tensile strength and dimensional stability.
Both the material and the washers cut from Mylar raw materials also demonstrate low moisture absorption, good dielectric properties and high thermal resistance, withstanding a temperature range of -70°C to +150°C. Mylar electrical insulation can also be supplied in cut sheets, full sized rolls, which are available in thicknesses from 23 to 500 microns, all of which can be used to convert into finished components and products.

Types of Electrical Insulation Materials Available

Epoxy Glass - a green coloured material with good mechanical strength, good chemical, electrical and radiation resistance, low moisture absorption and a working temperature range of upto +120℃.
Kapton - is a polyamide film which offers a combination of mechanical and tear strength along with chemical, electrical and thermal properties that enables the gasket to withstand vibration and extreme temperatures in demanding environments.
Leatheroid - is a grey/blue coloured paper gasket material, also sometimes called Elephantide. This material is used within the electrical industry to insulate hot elements.
MICA - is a mineral based sheeting material which has excellent mechanical performances, is resistant to chemicals and provides electrical and therm insulation. MICA gaskets are often used to replace asbestos as they can withstand extremely high temperatures of up to 1000℃.
Nomex can be manufactured using nomex paper or nomex board, it can withstand high temperatures, has high mechanical and dielectric strength, and is an excellent insulation material for all kinds of electrical equipment and applications.
Presspahn is a brown coloured material, manufactured using kraft wood pulp. Presspahn sheets have excellent physical and mechanical properties, generally used as electrical insulation.
SRBF is resin bonded fibre material which is tough and rigid, with an operating temperature of 120℃, low water absorption and is resistant to wear, impact chemicals.
SRBP (synthetic resin bonded paper) is manufactured using layers of paper and synthetic resins. This material is suited to high and medium voltage application. SRBP has good mechanical and excellent electrical insulation properties, with low water absorption.
Valox is an excellent electrical insulation material which also offers flame retardant properties.
PTFE is a non- conductive plastic material used to produce electrical insulation sheets. PTFE sheets are suitable for high temperature applications and have a high melting temperature. This material has excellent dielectric properties and can be often found used in circuit boards.
PVC is a tough, lightweight abrasion, chemical and moisture resistant material which has good dielectric strength making it a great material to use for electrical insulation applications.
