Poron Washers
Poron Sponge Washers are just one of the thousands of products manufactured by ASG. Poron material is one of hundreds of sponge and foam materials we stock from leading suppliers worldwide, giving customers greater choice when selecting materials for their specific applications. Poron sponge is produced in continuous roll lengths, with thicknesses ranging from 0.53 mm to 12.7 mm, and features a skin finish on both faces, from which washers can be cut.
Our in-house production facilities ensure that high-quality washers are manufactured consistently. Poron sponge washers are produced using drawings or measurements supplied by customers, guaranteeing that the final product meets exact specifications.
Depending on the size and quantity required, our production team selects from a range of machines, including atoms, autos, travelling head presses, or kiss-cut presses. For very large or thick washers, we can program our CNC (oscillating knife) to produce washers with either a plain or self-adhesive backed finish efficiently, keeping lead times short and costs competitive.

What are Poron Washers?
Washers are flat rings comprising an outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), and thickness, cut from Poron sponge. They are placed between two surfaces to fill gaps, create a level surface, act as spacers, or sit between nuts, bolts, and other fastenings to distribute pressure evenly and ensure a secure fit.
Poron sponge is a closed-cell microcellular urethane foam, cast and cured at various thicknesses. It is high-density and flexible, offering low outgassing, non-fogging, and non-corrosive properties, making it ideal for washers, seals, and vibration management applications. Poron washers are available in a range of grades, from very soft and easily compressible for enhanced sealing to firmer grades capable of managing high-energy impacts. A slow-recovery grade is also available for applications requiring low closure force.
Why Use Poron Washers?
Poron sponge is supplied in continuous rolls with a smooth outer skin on both faces. This makes the washers cut from it suitable for:
- Creating watertight seals
- Acting as thermal insulators
- Reducing vibration and noise
- Providing resistance to impact, chemicals, heat, UV, and ozone
Poron sponge washers meet flammability standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302, even without flame-retardant additives. They are low outgassing, non-fogging, and non-corrosive, preventing material degradation or contamination of surrounding components. Poron washers are commonly used in dust and water seals for lighting, automotive components, and electronic devices.
Benefits of Using Poron Sponge Rubber
- Excellent compression set resistance
- Temperature range: -40°C to +90°C
- Good chemical resistance
- Flame retardant to UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302
- Non-corrosive
- Easy to fabricate and cut into numerous components
Other Grades of Sponge Available
ASG stocks a wide variety of sponge rubbers, each with unique properties suited to different applications:
- EPDM Sponge Rubber – Excellent weathering, UV, and ozone resistance. It offers a wide temperature range, along with acoustic, thermal, and vibration-damping properties, as well as good mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. Available in medium, firm, high-temperature, and semi-open cell grades.
- Neoprene Sponge Rubber – Versatile, resilient, and UV/ozone resistant. Operating range: -40°C to +115°C, with good chemical stability and resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.
- Silicone Sponge – Chemically inert, waterproof, and closed-cell. Available in a range of densities. Resistant to ozone, UV, and temperature extremes.
- Viton Sponge – Closed-cell with skin on both faces for added tear resistance. Wide temperature range: -25°C to +204°C. Resistant to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering, and ozone.
- PVC Nitrile Sponge – Ideal for air, gas, and water-tight sealing, thermal insulation, vibration, and noise reduction. Resistant to impact, heat, UV, ozone, and flame retardant.
- Industrial Sponge Rubber – High-quality open-cell natural sponge. It offers excellent compression recovery, adapts to uneven surfaces, allows limited gas and liquid circulation, and is suitable for protective sponge, expansion joints, and anti-vibration applications.
Advantages of Using Poron Sponge Washers
Poron sponge is available in multiple roll sizes and grades, all suitable for washer conversion. The material is strong, flexible, and durable, with excellent compression set resistance for long-term performance. Being non-fogging and low outgassing, it contains no residual chemicals or plasticisers, ensuring it does not become brittle, disintegrate, or corrode surrounding components.
Poron sponge also provides moisture, chemical, UV, and ozone resistance, preventing condensation, corrosion, and the growth of bacteria, fungi, or rot. Its working temperature range is -40°C to +90°C, and it meets flammability standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302. Manufactured in rolls, Poron can be converted into washers of any size or quantity.
Poron sponge washers are commonly used as trims, glazing seals, anti-vibration pads, and gaskets in automotive, lighting, and other industrial applications.
