EPDM Sponge Rubber (Firm Grade)
Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd supply a range of EPDM materials, in various densities, grades and in various different products cut from the material. One popular EPDM sponge type being EPDM sponge rubber firm grade.
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is manufactured and stocked in block form, which we can split down into sheets or joined together and then split to produce continuous lengths or rolls of materials in thicknesses starting at just 1mm.
On-site conversion facilities mean we can split and stock rolls and sheets ready for despatch or use them to further convert into multiple usable finished parts including pads, washers, gaskets or strips - all supplied plain or laminated with a choice of one of our many self-adhesives or foils.
What is EPDM Sponge Rubber Firm grade?
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is just one of many closed cell sponge materials from our vast catalogue. EPDM is an abbreviation of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer which are the chemical components used to manufacture this sponge, to create a strong, synthetic material which is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively.
Firm Grade EPDM offers all the features and benefits of medium grade but offers slightly higher temperature resistance, higher tensile strength and higher compression deflection. EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is one of ASG’s core stock materials, held in the block, sheet and roll form in a range of thicknesses starting from as little as 1mm allowing for shorter lead times.

Why use EPDM sponge rubber (Firm grade)?
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade and products cut from firm grade EPDM sponge rubber are often used to fill gaps and irregularities between two surfaces and to provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.
As EPDM sponge is a closed-cell material, even when not compressed, its nitrogen gas-filled cells prevent the passage of air, liquids and gasses, the releasing of nitrogen gas gives the material its strong compression set and recovery characteristics.
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is a popular material found used in applications where all the features of a medium density sponge are needed, but with the greater mechanical properties such as the higher temperature resistance, higher tensile strength and higher compression deflection the firm grade can offer, which is desirable in more demanding environments such as within the construction industry, in automotive interiors, electronic, lighting systems ventilation glazing seals and door seals.
The Benefits of using EPDM sponge firm grade
- EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is noise, vibration, shock and abrasion reduction
- Flexible with a good compression set, tensile strength and temperature range
- EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is cost-effective and readily available
- Naturally compressible to create the perfect seal to control air and water leaks
- Closed-cell structure prevents bacteria and moulds build-up
- Excellent properties making it popular for use in a range of industries and applications
- EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is easy to convert into a range of products and will hold most adhesives well
The Advantages of using EPDM sponge (firm grade)
EPDM sponge is a strong, synthetic material that is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively, it has an excellent lifespan even when used outdoors and is free from dust and fibre.
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade can be manufactured in a range of bespoke sized products, and supplied plain or laminated with a choice of foils and self-adhesives applied to one or both faces. For very thick sheets or where a combination of properties are required, EPDM sponge sheets can be laminated together in layers or can be laminated to other materials for use within more specialist applications.
EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is a popular choice of material that is air and watertight, ages well without becoming brittle offers good UV resistance and is able to withstand a wide scale of temperatures ranging from -40°C up to a high of 80°C. It’s an excellent electrical insulation material, as well as having good resistance to ketones, ordinary diluted acids and alkalis, Ozone, UV and weathering as well as its general resistance to abrasion.
EPDM foam is also flammability tested to meet FMVSS302 and UL94 HBF standards. EPDM sponge rubber firm grade is a more resilient material that will not compress as much as the standard grades under load, also this material benefits from increased tear strength and suits some of the more demanding applications such as Automotive, White Goods, Marine, Defence, Building and Construction, etc
Grades of EPDM sponge sheets available
ASG stock a variety of other grades and densities of EPDM sponge which include firm grade, high temperature and semi-open cell varieties:
High-Temperature EPDM Foam is closed cell and highly flexible even at low temperatures, with an amazing temperature range of -50°c to +128°c. High-Temperature EPDM foam has many excellent mechanical characteristics including thermal and insulation properties, making this material ideal for many industries and applications including HVAC, Refrigeration, Pipeline, Automotive, White goods and Building & construction, etc.
Semi-Open cell EPDM combines the flexibility of an open cell material with the excellent sealing capabilities of closed-cell types once compressed. Semi-open cell EPDM pads will allow for the ingress of air, dust, moisture until compressed by 80% of their thickness, following this the product becomes water and airtight and behaves as a closed-cell product.
Medium Grade EPDM Foam is a high-quality, closed-cell material that is commonly used in air and water sealing in indoor and outdoor applications due to its superior UV and Ozone resistance. Medium grade EPDM offers a density of 90 – 140kg/m3, an operating temperature range of -20°c to +85°c and is available in a choice of black or white.
