Butyl Gaskets

Butyl Gaskets: Here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets, we produce a variety of gaskets, cut from butyl.  Solid butyl rubber is manufactured and stocked as rolls in a range of thicknesses, from which washers and other products can be cut.

Our washers are produced on-site using drawings, samples or measurements provided by our customers, from a simple picture frame gasket to more complex shapes with cut-outs, notches or bolt-holes/.  Whether it’s a sample or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine designed to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed gaskets every time.

Our butyl rubber is available in a range of standard manufactured thicknesses starting at just 1mm, which can then be laminated to other materials or coated with a self-adhesive backing prior to the gaskets being cut.

What are Butyl Gaskets?

Solid Butyl rubber is a synthetic rubber made up of blending isobutylene with isoprene, this creates a property known as Polyisobutylene, commonly known as PIB. This material offers many desirable properties including excellent thermal stability and resistance to UV and weathering, it also has an impermeable structure required for air retention or gas sealing applications.

Butyl rubber gaskets sometimes come in the form of a strip or pad but are generally an intricately cut shaped piece of material placed between two surfaces to create a low-pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris.

    Gaskets

ASG produce gaskets in our newly renovated facilities using state of the art machinery including a choice of presses and oscillating knife. Producing gaskets in-house enables us to work alongside our customers to provide the best quality gaskets to their specifications to ensure that the gaskets are produced for the desired applications.

We produce gaskets in most materials such as EPDM, neoprene, nitrile, polyethylene, Plastazote, Evazote, rubber, silicone sponge, plastic, foam and many more.  For more information on the many materials, we offer please get in touch with our team.

    Why use Butyl Gaskets?

Butyl rubber gaskets are often found used in many applications where there is exposure to water or gas.  Butyl rubber is a highly durable and stable material with exceptional resistance to UV,  weathering and ozone which make it excellent for both internal and external use.

The material is flexible, has a good resistance to flex cracking, abrasion, impact and tear, combined with a low gas and vapour permeability, butyl rubber which makes butyl gaskets perfect for use in gas and air sealing applications. However, they aren't suitable to use with oils and petrol.

Washers are often used as a type of seal, where they can create air/liquid-tight seals in pipework, but surprisingly serve a number of purposes which include load distribution, to reduce the stress on the materials into which fasteners are driven and therefore reducing damage.

Washers are also used as spacers to allow a better fit of fasteners, for example where the fastener is too long, washers can be used to create padding and fill the gap ensuring the fastener doesn't go too deep.  Finally, washers can be designed to absorb vibration, especially when used to connect objects with hard surfaces and a lot of movement.

The Advantages of Using Butyl Washers

There are many advantages to using butyl rubber gaskets in your projects as the material offers many excellent properties, characteristics and uses.  It’s a flexible material even at low temperatures with a wide operating temperature of  -40°C to +140°C and is pre-manufactured in a range of thicknesses ready for converting into gaskets, washers and other products.

Solid Butyl resists degradation caused by UV, weathering, heat, moisture and some acids and alkaline chemicals. Its structure is impermeable to gas and compressed air, making it an excellent choice for air retention, therefore perfect for creating gas and air seals.  As we manufacture butyl gaskets on-site, we can offer them in bespoke sizes, in any quantity and supplied with a choice of self-adhesive or foil backings.
