EPDM Foam Strip
EPDM Foam Strip
At Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd EPDM sponge strips are one of the most popular products we manufacture, sometimes also called EPDM foam strip, foam tape, gasket strip, glazing strip, gasket tape or a weather strip. As EPDM sponge is one of our core stock materials, strips can be turned around within a minimal lead time using sheets or rolls of material which we split directly from blocks, all manufactured by our highly skilled workforce using state of the art machinery.
By following our customer's samples, drawings or given dimensions, we can produce made to measure EPDM sponge strips using our bandsaws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity of strips required. In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitive prices strips.
Our EPDM sponge strips are cut from sheets or rolls split down to thicknesses starting at just 1mm thick, we can produce strips from 4mm in width and from a few millimetres long up to 50 meters in length (depending on thickness). During the conversion process, we can laminate layers of EPDM sponge material to produce greater depths or supply them plainly, laminated with a choice of self-adhesive foils or even other materials.
What are EPDM Sponge Strips?
EPDM is an abbreviation of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer which are the chemical components used to manufacture this sponge. EPDM sponge is a strong, synthetic material that is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the strips to work effectively.
EPDM sponge strips are lengths of material often cut to a specific length or supplied as continuous rolls/coils to be cut as when needed by the end-user. EPDM sponge strips are often purchased to be used in the same way as a gasket, whereby they are used to create a seal between uneven surfaces and fill irregularities or for anti-vibration and acoustic insulations.

Why use EPDM Sponge Strips?
EPDM sponge strips are often used in the same way as gaskets, to fill gaps and irregularities between two surfaces and to provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.
In order for strips to work effectively, it needs to compress and fill the entire space to create pressure and an airtight protective seal. As EPDM sponge is a closed-cell material, even when not compressed, its nitrogen gas-filled cells prevent the passage of air, liquids and gasses, the releasing of nitrogen gas gives the material its strong compression set and recovery characteristics.
EPDM sponge strips are a popular product in a variety of applications for a number of reasons and can be found used within the construction industry, in automotive interiors, electronic, lighting systems ventilation glazing seals and door sealing.
The Benefits of Using EPDM Sponge Strips
- Noise, vibration, shock and abrasion reduction
- Flexible with good compression recovery
- Cost-effective and readily available
- Naturally compressible to create the perfect seal to control air and water leaks
- Closed-cell structure prevents bacteria and moulds build-up
- Excellent properties making it popular for use in a range of industries and applications
- Easy to convert into a range of products including gaskets, and will hold most adhesives well
The Advantages of Using EPDM Sponge Strips
EPDM sponge strips are produced using a strong, synthetic material which is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively, it has an excellent lifespan even when used outdoors and is free from dust and fibre.
EPDM sponge strips can be manufactured in a huge range of sizes and thicknesses, with a choice of foils and self-adhesives applied to one or both faces. For very thick strips or where a combination of properties is required, the EPDM sponge can be laminated in layers or to other materials for use within more specialist applications.
EPDM sponge is a popular choice of material that is air and watertight, ages well without becoming brittle offers good UV resistance and is able to withstand a wide scale of temperatures ranging from -20°C up to a high of 85°C.
It’s excellent electrical insulation material, as well as having good resistance to ketones, ordinary diluted acids and alkalis, Ozone, UV and weathering as well as its general resistance to abrasion. EPDM foam is also flammability tested to meet FMVSS302 and UL94 HBF standards.
Grades of EPDM Sponge Strips Available
ASG stock a variety of other grades and densities of EPDM sponge which can call be used to manufacture gaskets each suited to individual applications. These include firm grade, high temperature and semi-open cell varieties:
High Temperature EPDM Foam is closed cell and highly flexible even at low temperatures, with an amazing temperature range of -50°c to +128°c. High-Temperature EPDM foam has many excellent mechanical characteristics including thermal and insulation properties, making this material ideal for many industries and applications including HVAC, Refrigeration, Pipeline, Automotive, White goods and Building & construction, etc.
Semi-Open cell EPDM combines the flexibility of an open cell material with the excellent sealing capabilities of closed-cell types once compressed. Semi-open cell EPDM pads will allow for the ingress of air, dust, moisture until compressed by 80% of their thickness, following this the product becomes water and airtight and behaves as a closed-cell product.
Firm Grade EPDM Foam is a more resilient material that will not compress as much as the standard grades under load, also this material benefits from increased tear strength and suits some of the more demanding applications such as Automotive, White Goods, Marine, Defence, Building and Construction, etc
