Ethafoam Gasket
Advanced Seals & Gasket’s extensive storage facilities enables us to stock blocks (buns), rolls and sheets of polyethylene, in a range of densities and colours all ready to be converted into one of 1000’s of products including gaskets. One such product is our Ethafoam Gasket.
Ethafoam is just one of various types of Polyethylene Foams available from ASG. Most polyethylene materials are manufactured in block form, this includes Ethafoam, which vary in size depending on the density and grade. Ethafoam Polyethylene can sometimes be referred to as Jiffy foam or Stratocell. As we offer an inhouse conversion and lamination service, we are able to not only split materials down into standard sheets and rolls at thicknesses starting from just 1.5mm, we can also laminate layers together creating greater depths allowing us to produce very thick Ethafoam gaskets.
As our Ethafoam gaskets are produced in-house on state of the art machinery, we can manufacture bespoke items to match our customers samples or drawings, from a simple rectangular picture frame gasket, to a more complex profile with cut-outs and notches - we can offer a solution. Whether it’s a small sample batch or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed gaskets in a range of sizes, these include a number of presses, CNC and kiss cut machines.
Our Ethafoam gaskets can be produced plain or with a choice of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated to other materials. Depending on the size and quantity of the gasket, they can be supplied as loosely packed parts, or kiss-cut on a roll for quick and efficient use.

What are Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Gaskets?
Ethafoam gaskets can take the form of a strip or pad, but are generally an intricately cut shaped piece of material placed between two surfaces to create a low pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris when under compression.
Ethafoam is a resilient and flexible closed-cell polyethylene foam, similar to polystyrene in appearance and feel, which has a range of uses due to its durability and flexibility. Ethafoam is a low-density plastic foam made by expanding polyethylene by around 30 times in volume, which is manufactured or ‘extruded’ as planks so that it has skin on both faces which is textured, with exposed cell along the edges where it has been down to size.
Ethafoam is available in white or grey, and in different grades and densities such as 24kg/m2 and 64kg/m2 for packaging, 102kg/m2 and 145kg/m2 for high load bearing, a Flame Retardant grade and Anti-static which is recognisable by its pink colouration. Ethafoam gaskets are commonly found used within packaging applications due to its impact, shock absorption and cushioning properties and its resistance to moisture.
Why use Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Gaskets?
Ethafoam gaskets can be cut from rolls or sheets of material in a choice of densities and colours. Ethafoam gaskets are used to protect fragile, sensitive and valuable products where protection from repeated impact, moisture, chemicals and mildew or fungus is required. Ethafoam is a material, which can be machined or fabricated into bespoke shapes in order to securely hold items in place whilst providing cushioning.
As Ethafoam is manufactured in a number of grades and densities, so it can be used for products regardless of its weight, however due to the coarse nature of the material it may not always be suitable for direct contact with products, in which case the object can be wrapped or the Ethafoam casing lined with smoother and softer layer of foam which will not cause abrasive damage.
Ethafoam gaskets can be used to fill gaps and irregularities between uneven surfaces, provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against dust, they can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment such as during transportation.
Benefits of using Ethafoam Polyethylene:
- Shock, impact and vibration absorption
- Moisture resistant
- Impervious to many chemicals, mould, fungus and bacteria
- Easy to cut, carve and fabricate
- Available in a range of densities
- Lightweight
Alternative packaging foams
- Convoluted or Eggbox Polyurethane
- Pick & pluck Polyurethane
- Anti static Polyethylene
- Anti-static Polyurethane
- Conductive Polyethylene
- Plastazote foams
- Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam
Advantages of using Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Gaskets
Ethafoam is supplied in sheet or ‘plank’ form as standard, but as this material is so machinable, it can easily be pressed and sawn into bespoke gaskets. Ethafoam Polyethylene gaskets are strong, lightweight material with a skin finish which creates a moisture, mildew and bacteria resistant material.
This material is resilient therefore perfect for gaskets which need to withstand repeated impact, vibration and will insulate against heat and cold - offering a working temperature range of -30 to +80ºC and resistance to many chemicals.
The main advantages of Ethafoam gaskets are their durability, available in a choice of grey or white colours, a range of densities from 24kg/m3 to 145kg/m2 to be able to withstand even extreme weight and in specialist grades such as Flame Retardant and Anti-Static. Ethafoam gaskets shock and vibration absorption levels can be increased by stacking or layering multiple pads together to create depth and cover larger surface areas.
Due to the vast choice of Ethafoam materials available, the gaskets cut from them can be found used in a range of applications from standard packaging around electrical appliances, white goods and case inserts through to supporting very heavy objects such as ground cables or under machinery feet.
