Sponge washers are just one of many products manufactured and supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd who work with a number of worldwide sponge and foam material manufacturers and suppliers, allowing us to offer customers more choice when looking for a suitable product for their application. One such material includes PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber or PVC/NBR which is manufactured in a range of thicknesses from 3mm to 50mm, with a skin finish on both faces in rolls of up to 30 meters long, however thicker materials may only be available as sheets.
For non-standard thicknesses we can run the rolls through our state of the art splitting machines to create thicknesses from just 1.5mm with a cell-cell or skin-cell finish. In-house production ensures that high standards are maintained, in turn producing high quality washers consistently. PVC Nitrile sponge washers are produced using drawings or dimensions provided by our customers, ensuring the final product is produced to their exact specification.
Depending on the size and quantity of the washers required, our production team will select from our range of atoms, autos, traveling head, kiss cut pressing machines or for very large or thick washers, we can program our CNC (oscillating knife) to produce the washers in the most efficient way to keep lead times and costs down.

What are PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber Washers?
PVC Nitrile sponge rubber formulated using a blend of Nitrile and PVC polymer compounds, resulting in a soft and flexible closed cell material with a skin finish on both faces. This material can be used to cut washers for use as shock or impact absorption, noise reduction, anti-vibration, gap filling and for gas, moisture and air sealing. Washers are a flat ring (comprising of an Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the thickness) cut from materials, which is placed between two surfaces to fill gaps, creating a level surface, acting as a spacer or between nuts, bolts and other fastenings to spread the pressure when tightened and ensure a secure fit.

PVC Nitrile sponge washers can be used in a range of industries as they offer a number of characteristics and properties making them suitable for use to create a watertight seal, to reduce vibration, rattles and noise, as well as being impact, heat, UV, Ozone resistant and flame retardant. PVC Nitrile washers are safe to use in building and construction applications as they are dust free, therefore will not affect the air quality and are tested to class O fire test specifications.

Other Grades of Sponge Available
There are different types and grades of sponge washers available for use within many industries each with their own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:
EPDM sponge rubber is a high quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor sealing. EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion resistant properties. Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi open cell.
Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone. It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.
Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof. Silicone sponge is closed cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features which make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.
Viton sponge is another closed cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG. It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance. It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.
Poron sponge is closed cell polyurethane sponge rubber, which offers excellent compression resistance, good chemical resistance and longevity. This material is low out-gassing, non-fogging and will not become brittle and break down over time.
Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open cell natural sponge rubber. The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required. Its is an excellent choice of material for us as protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.
Advantages of Using PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber Washers
PVC Nitrile is manufactured in a range of thicknesses, which means many standard thickness washers can be cut within a minimal time frame, the material is easy to split and convert so if bespoke thicknesses are required, these can be turned around fairly quickly.
PVC Nitrile holds adhesives well and therefore we can offer our gaskets plain or laminated with one of many adhesives or foils in order to securely hold the washer in situ. PVC Nitrile sponge washers offer moisture, flame, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevents condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus, therefore protecting the surface around it.
This material has some resistance to chemicals, grease and oil, combined with a working temperature range of -50°C to 116°C and is flammability tested to meet Class O specifications, meaning the material doesn’t burn and flame spread is reduced making these washers suitable for use in HVAC, refrigerators, building & construction, sealing and pipework insulation.
