Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Washers

Semi Open Cell EPDM Sponge Washers

At Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we manufacture and supply thousands of washers from a variety of EPDM sponge materials, available in different densities, grades, and forms. Among these are semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers, a specialist material designed for both indoor and outdoor sealing applications.

One of the EPDM sponge grades we offer is semi-open cell EPDM sponge, sometimes called semi-closed cell sponge or semi-open cell foam. This material is produced in block form, which can be split into sheets or joined together and then split again to produce continuous lengths or rolls of material in thicknesses starting at just 1.5mm. From these, semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers can be cut.

Semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers are manufactured on-site using drawings or measurements provided by our customers. We work closely with clients to ensure the final product meets their exact specifications. Depending on the size and quantity required, one of our presses or CNC machines is used for production. From one-off samples to multi-thousand batch runs, we have machines designed to efficiently produce perfectly formed semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers every time.

Our on-site conversion facilities allow us to stock and supply rolls and sheets, which are ready for dispatch or further conversion into finished parts. These include semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers, which can be supplied plain or laminated with a choice of self-adhesives or foils.

What are Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Washers?

Semi-open cell EPDM is an incredibly soft and flexible grade of EPDM sponge rubber. While still made from Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, the material undergoes a manufacturing process that creates a mixture of open and closed cells throughout.

The cell structure is created by physically "bursting" the closed-cell structure, producing a softer material that is easier to compress than medium or firm-grade EPDM sponge. This makes it ideal for producing sealing products such as gaskets and semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers.

Semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers are flat rings with an outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID) measurement, cut from sheets of material. They are placed between two surfaces to create a level surface, acting as a spacer, seal, or between nuts and bolts to spread pressure when tightened.

Why use Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Washers?

Semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers combine the flexibility and compressibility of an open-cell foam with the excellent sealing properties of a closed-cell sponge under compression. They are durable and offer the excellent ozone and weathering resistance of standard EPDM, with improved recovery following compression, making them ideal for sealing applications.

Semi-open cell EPDM sponge can be supplied as sheets, rolls, or pre-cut parts, such as semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers, providing reliable solutions for indoor and outdoor sealing and protecting against air, dust, and moisture.

Benefits of using Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge

    • Resistance to ozone and UV light

    • Soft and compressible

    • A combination of open and closed cells

    • Excellent acoustic performance

    • Good compression set

    • Seals against air, dust & moisture

    • Converted onsite into a range of thicknesses and products, such as semi-open cell EPDM sponge washers

The Advantages of Using Semi-Open Cell EPDM Sponge Rubber Washers

The super-soft nature of semi-open cell EPDM allows washers to provide excellent sealing once compressed. Low compression load enables the foam to compensate for dimensional deviations in substrates, making it suitable for rough, smooth, and low-energy surfaces.

The material offers resistance to ozone and UV, has a wide working temperature range of -40 ˚C to 100 ˚C, and is suitable for sealing against water, dust, and air. Its soft and comfortable nature allows it to be converted into a range of products, including sponge rubber washers used as vibration and acoustic solutions in HVAC systems, glazing seals, and in the automotive industry.

    Grades of EPDM Sponge Available

ASG stocks a variety of EPDM sponge grades and densities, all suited to different applications:

    • Medium-Density EPDM – Available in black or white, this closed-cell material is ideal for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required. Density: 90–140 kg/m³, operating temperature: -20°C to +85°C, flammability tested to FMVSS 302.

    • High-Temperature EPDM Foam – Closed-cell and highly flexible even at low temperatures, with a range of -50°C to +128°C. These materials have excellent thermal and insulation properties, suitable for HVAC, refrigeration, pipelines, automotive, white goods, and construction.

    • Firm Grade EPDM Foam – Resilient material with increased tear strength, suited for demanding applications in automotive, white goods, marine, defence, and building & construction.
