Sulphur Free EPDM Sponge Washers

Sulphur Free Epdm Sponge Rubber Washers

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is one of Advanced Seals & Gaskets’ most popular materials for washer production. We offer EPDM in both solid and sponge variants, across multiple grades, hardnesses, and densities. Among these is Sulphur Free EPDM Sponge, sometimes referred to as Peroxide Cured EPDM, widely used for washers in delicate or critical applications.

This material is manufactured and stocked in block form, ready to be cut and converted into washers. Using customer-provided samples, drawings, or dimensions, we can produce washers of almost any size and quantity. Production is completed using one of our specialised presses or CNC/oscillating knives (for larger or thicker items), and washers can be supplied plain or with a self-adhesive finish. They can also be provided as loose cut parts or kiss cut on sheets/rolls, allowing for more time-efficient application for the end user.

Sulphur-free EPDM foam blocks can be split down to just 1mm or laminated to greater thicknesses for bespoke washer conversion. By producing washers in-house, we maintain strict quality control and keep lead times low.

What are Sulphur-Free EPDM Sponge Rubber Washers?

Sulphur-free EPDM washers are flat rings with an inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD). They are placed between two surfaces to create a level surface, acting as a spacer or seal, or between fixtures like nuts and bolts to distribute pressure when tightened.

Unlike standard EPDM, which is sulphur-cured, Sulphur Free EPDM (peroxide-cured) is used in applications where sulphur could damage sensitive components. Sulphur-cured sponges can corrode metals like copper, silver, and other materials, potentially causing electrical failures. Sulphur-free EPDM sponge avoids this issue and also provides improved chemical and temperature resistance, making it ideal for lighting, electronics, and other precision applications.

Why Use Sulphur-Free EPDM Sponge Washers?

Sulphur-free EPDM sponge is a closed-cell material offering thermal insulation, shock and vibration absorption, UV and ozone resistance, and excellent sealing against dust, air, and moisture. These properties make it safer and more reliable than standard EPDM for critical applications.

The Benefits of Using Sulphur-Free EPDM Sponge

    • Noise, vibration, and shock reduction

    • Naturally compressible to create effective air or moisture seals

    • Closed-cell structure prevents bacteria and mould build-up.

    • Excellent properties make it suitable for a wide range of industries and applications.

    • Easily converted into pads, strips, gaskets, and washers.

    • Holds most adhesives well

    • Reduces equipment and appliance failure

Other Grades of EPDM Sponge Washers Available

ASG stocks a variety of EPDM sponge grades and densities, all suitable for washer production:

    • Medium Density EPDM – Air and water-tight, resistant to UV, ageing well, withstanding -20°C to +85°C. Excellent electrical insulation and resistant to ketones, diluted acids, alkalis, ozone, UV, and weathering. Flammability tested to FMVSS302 and UL94 HBF standards.

    • High-Temperature EPDM Foam – Closed-cell, highly flexible even at low temperatures. Operating range: -50°C to +128°C. This material offers thermal and insulation properties, ideal for HVAC, refrigeration, pipelines, automotive, white goods, and construction.

    • Semi Open Cell EPDM – Combines the flexibility of open-cell foam with the sealing ability of closed-cell foam once compressed. Pads allow partial ingress of air, dust, and moisture until compressed, then act as a water and air-tight seal.

    • Firm Grade EPDM Foam – Resilient material with higher tear strength, suited to demanding applications in automotive, white goods, marine, defence, building, and construction.

Advantages of Using Sulphur-Free EPDM Washers

Sulphur-free EPDM washers offer enhanced safety and reliability over standard EPDM or other foam materials. They maintain all the closed-cell benefits—thermal insulation, shock absorption, UV and ozone resistance, and excellent sealing—while providing improved chemical and temperature resistance.

Sulphur or peroxide-cured EPDM is particularly beneficial in lighting, electronics, and automotive applications because it does not react with metals like copper or silver, preventing corrosion and equipment failure. Available in blocks, rolls, or bespoke parts, these materials can be split or fabricated to meet specific requirements.
